This page is an overview of my history as a musician, the projects I've worked on, and the equipment I use. There are various links below about different project and pieces of equipment that deserve their own special page, so be sure to visit those as well. I'll update this page whenever a new band gets started or a new project is completed, so check back from time to time to see what I'm up to.

History

I've been playing piano and drums since I was in fourth grade. I suppose it's as good a way to start off as any. The drums enabled me to participate in school bands, which I continued to do up through high school, and the piano afforded me the foundation in theory which has allowed me to pick up new instruments on my own and compose my own pieces. I've been composing my own works since 5th grade (and hopefully they've improved dramatically since then).

In middle school I was selected to be in the Olympic Conference Honors Band as their timpani player, a position which I was again selected for in high school. In high school I was in the top tier concert band and played a variety of different percussion instruments. At that time I was also involved in the Marching Band (who were USSBA Champions my senior year, when I was the Drum Sergeant) and Indoor Drumline (who came in second place by one-tenth of a point at the Tournament of Bands Final Competition in Wildwood my sophomore year). I have a lot of fond memories of both, which I may add here at some point in the future.

In high school I also became involved at Hope United Methodist Church, and performed in a handful of different capacities there. It was on a mission trip that I first decided I wanted to pick up the guitar, and being involved at Hope gave me a lot of opportunity and motivation to continue with that. Hope was also where I met the two people I would end up being in a band with: Michael Baumann and Paul Boye. We called ourselves "The Defenestrators" and self-funded the recording of an album, mostly for posterities' sake. You can read more about that on The Defenestrators page.

During college I spent a lot more time playing guitar by myself or with a handful of other people, and towards the end of college and through to today I tend to spend a lot of time in these smaller groups or working on some solo projects (those are detailed below). One notable exception is a project I was involved with that centered around the XKCD meet-up. We put together some songs based on our favorite XKCD strips and became wandering minstrels for the day. That project was called "[citation needed]" and you can read more about that on the [citation needed] page.

The future seems to be full of possibilities of putting bands together with people, but there's nothing set in stone about that. If something does come up, you can expect to read about it here. Regardless of that, there should be a bunch of different solo projects forthcoming, so check back here to read up on those.

Bands

The Defenestrators

The Defenestrators was a three piece band originating out of Voorhees, NJ. We ended up labeling ourselves as alternative, though we had a few people who decided we should be labeled as alternative storytelling. In the end we were just three high school dudes who had always wanted to be in a band and record our own music.

[citation needed]

This project was formed off of an idea Dave Helperin had based as we were approaching a meet-up of XKCD readers in Cambridge, MA. We put together a set of songs inspired by various XKCD comics, and became wandering minstrels for the day.

Solo Projects

Hazel

This piece was written during the summer of 2007 for my friend Rachel Ober, who had expressed to me at the time that she'd always wanted someone to write her a song. The piece is orchestrated for piano and voice, and I hope to get the lyrics and a recording up sometime soon.

Can't Find The Words

This piece was written during the summer of 2009, and was inspired by some internal emotional conflict I was experiencing, as well as a need to write something finger-picked on an acoustic guitar. This project currently is orchestrated for guitar and voice, but some work has been done to orchestrate it for a full band. I hope to get the lyrics and a recording up sometime soon.
